At this time of year, grizzlies begin descending from the heights to feed on salmon in the river. Other animals can also frequently be seen in the valley, particularly bald eagles and, for the lucky few, sometimes a wolf or a large cat.
The mini-groups generally consist of a guide and 1 to 4 guests maximum. All the ranch’s guides are experts in bear behaviour and know their territory remarkably well; they are also trained trackers. This is why they will safely take you to follow the tracks of wild grizzlies, right at the heart of their natural habitat. Their respect for this impressive mammal drives them to commit to the conservation of the species: no mass expeditions, viewing platforms, or food bait here, but discretion, humility, and patience!

Tweedsmuir Park Lodge
Grizzly bear watching from early September to mid-October only.

Tweedsmuir Park Lodge, Canada © Guy Rutty

There are many ways to watch bears at Tweedsmuir Park Lodge: surrounded by spectacular views over the forest and mountains, try to spot mothers and their curious cubs wandering freely through the lodge grounds. An important point: these bears are not “food-conditioned”. They venture onto the lawns of their own accord and are neither fed nor encouraged to approach. You can also drift down the Atnarko River in a non-motorized boat in search of grizzlies feeding on salmon, go hiking with an expert guide to try to observe them, or head to a wooden viewing platform.
Also discover the culture of the First Nations of Bella Coola: let yourself be carried through 10,000 years of authentic songs and stories while visiting various sites significant to the Nuxalk Nation. These visits, which take place on Nuxalk territory, invite you to explore several of these sites, including the giant cedar forests of Walker Island, and a discovery of striking stone carvings, with the expertise of a Nuxalk guide to explain their meanings.

Nimmo Bay Resort
West coast of British Columbia, between the North Pacific and the snow-capped peaks of the Coast Mountains.

Nimmo Bay Resort, Canada © Jeremy Koreski

Nimmo Bay Wilderness Resort — listed on National Geographic’s highly exclusive “Unique Lodges of the World” — is the very definition of a secret refuge, nestled within the ancient rainforests of the Great Bear Rainforest in British Columbia.
