As one of only four regions in Namibia bordering the Atlantic Ocean to the west, the Erongo region is without question one of the country's most sought-after destinations. Much of this appeal rests on Swakopmund, the regional capital with its colonial charm, as well as on well-known sites such as Walvis Bay, Karibib, Omaruru and the busy Henties Bay.
The eastern part of the region makes full use of its semi-arid soils, forming a dynamic agricultural hub, while livestock farming and related trade are concentrated around Karibib, Omaruru, Okombahe and Uis. Further west, the economy is dominated by mining: gold at Navachab Mines near Karibib, and uranium at the uranium mine near Swakopmund.
Along the coast, fishing and tourism are the main economic drivers. Walvis Bay is home to the well-known Namibian fishing industry, while endless white sand beaches and a wide range of water activities draw travellers and thrill-seekers alike, offering experiences to suit every taste and budget.
