Tailor-made trip to Costa Rica

Experience the scent of freshness beneath the forest canopy, of purity but also of lushness, diversity, abundance.
Quench your thirst for greenery, embrace the overflowing nature, take it in with relish, satisfy your appetite for novelty and encounter.
Live an experience rich in sensation, amid countless natural treasures — rainforests, volcanoes, rivers, beaches, mountains.

A trip to Costa Rica means all of this at once.
Recognised for its biodiversity and its commitment to ecotourism, Costa Rica lives up to its name through the richness of its fauna and flora.

We often suggest experiencing Costa Rica with a rental vehicle. But we can also arrange a private driver. And book domestic flights to take you to more remote regions, such as the Osa Peninsula and Corcovado National Park. Preserved places, where nature reigns.

When to travel to Costa Rica

La géographie montagneuse du Costa Rica joue un rôle très important dans le climat agréable du pays. Budget to plan for

Costa Rica has a broad hotel infrastructure.
A 2-week trip to Costa Rica with mid-range accommodation and a 4×4 rental represents an average budget of around €3,800 per person, including international flights in economy class.
A 4-day, 3-night stay in Corcovado National Park represents a budget of around €1,000 per person, including round-trip flights from San José, accommodation, meals and activities.

Expert advice

A trip to Costa Rica requires a minimum of 9 days.
The first night is usually spent in San José upon arrival.
We then recommend planning a maximum of 3 stops: 3 national parks, including 1 coastal one such as Tortuguero or Corcovado, or 2 national parks plus 1 beach stop.
The ideal length is around 2 weeks. The first stop can be Tortuguero: you are collected by the lodges, which makes it easy to adjust to jet lag without any hassle. A rental vehicle is then delivered to you upon arrival of the boats, so you can begin your journey. Depending on your pace, you will discover several national parks, each with very different themes. A remarkable playground — set aside time for activities such as rafting, hiking or horseback riding, or simply take time to observe. The end of the trip can be planned by the sea: either a beach stay, or a stay in Corcovado.

A pet peeve

Tortuguero, lodges that are too crowded.
Tortuguero is a wetland area of very humid tropical forest where you travel by canoe along the canals to observe an incredibly diverse range of wildlife: amphibians, insects, spiders, reptiles, sloths…
Outings in lanchas (local boats) are organised by the lodges with specialised guides, but in groups of around 20-25 people.
There is, however, one exception: the Manatus Hotel, which limits its groups to 5 people. As the lodge has only 5 rooms, spots are hard to come by!

Your questions / Our answers

Looking for nature and activities in Costa Rica — what would you recommend?

Costa Rica is without question a remarkable playground for activities at the heart of abundant nature: rafting, canopy tours, horseback riding, surfing, hiking, trekking, water activities, and observing turtles, whales, birds (toucans, macaws, quetzals…), monkeys, coatis, sloths, amphibians, and many other species.

Luxury hotels in Costa Rica: isn't that at odds with environmental protection?

Costa Rica offers exceptional accommodation options, on the Caribbean coast, the Pacific coast, or in the Central Valley. The possibilities are numerous. These properties are remarkably well integrated into their surroundings, whether set in primary rainforest, along a riverbank, or overlooking the ocean. Costa Rica is particularly attentive to nature conservation and pursues a policy aimed at supporting tourism development in the country while preserving the balance between economy, society, and environment. The aim is also to improve the management of natural, cultural, and social resources and to encourage active participation from local communities.

Is Costa Rica a suitable destination for birdwatching?

We organise excursions to observe hundreds of waterbirds such as roseate spoonbills, storks, herons, anhingas, cormorants, northern jacanas, and the jabiru (the largest waterbird in the Americas, now threatened with extinction), among many others. Costa Rica is also where you can observe the resplendent quetzal, considered one of the most beautiful tropical birds in the world. It inhabits the cloud forest between 1,500 and 3,000 metres in altitude.

Where to travel as a family with children and teenagers in Latin America?

If we had to pick three, it would be Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru.
Costa Rica, because it’s a small country of nature best explored freely, with a rental car. It offers a genuine playground suited to a host of sporting and fun activities. Each day is punctuated by sightings of turtles, whales, noisy tropical wildlife, volcanoes, bubbling hot springs. We love it!
Mexico, and the Yucatan in particular, because it lets you combine culture, nature and beach without covering long distances, with a rental car.
Peru, because it guarantees a trip punctuated by cultural and sporting activities. And walking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu will stay etched in your memory forever.
