Peru

The mysterious cities of gold

Tailor-made trip to Peru

“Let him who wants to live happily not stay silent.” Peruvian proverb.
So let's talk about Peru. And let's state loud and clear that this country is one of our planet's true wonders!
Peru, a prime dish for those who know how to appreciate the flavours of our world. A distant and precious land that one treads with delight. A destination one cannot help but fall hopelessly in love with.

Few places in South America leave as lasting an impression as this country.

Even on a short trip to Peru, one has the impression of having travelled the four corners of the planet.
Magnificent beaches along the Pacific, arid deserts, wild dunes, otherworldly oases, superb stretches of vineyards, valleys, plateaus and glaciers of the Andes mountain range, immense rivers and lakes, Amazon jungles and forests. Peru offers an extraordinary natural range.
But the richness of this natural diversity is matched only by its cultural diversity.
How could one imagine Peru without its people and their cities, from present times or forgotten ones? Without this incredible blend of pre-Columbian, Inca, Andean and Spanish civilisations, and the treasures they have passed down to us such as Machu Picchu, Cuzco, Chan-Chan, Arequipa…? Or without the mysteries that still surround the Nazca geoglyphs — the hummingbird, the spider, the astronaut, or the Paracas candelabra?

A harmonious, gentle blend of untamed nature, vibrant cultures, fascinating archaeology and captivating mysteries, Peru is a land where everyone will find the happiness they are looking for.

Expert advice

It is difficult to discover every region in a single trip.
We recommend planning 12 days to visit the main regions such as Titicaca, the Sacred Valley of Cuzco and Machu Picchu. A stop in Arequipa is recommended for better acclimatisation to altitude.
If you wish to add a visit to the Amazon, allow at least 3 additional days.

Unbelievable!

« Machu Picchu threatened by new international airport», headlined Courrier International on 17 May 2019: « »The opening of a new international airport in Peru could endanger Machu Picchu, symbol of Inca civilisation. Historians and archaeologists fear irreversible damage to this already fragile monument« .

Unbelievable!
The Inca fortress was listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1983. In 2011, the World Heritage Committee declined to place Machu Picchu on the List of World Heritage in Danger but added it to a watch list. Indeed, the Inca fortress is grappling with “excess visitor numbers” and is threatened by “the construction of a nearby road”.
As a result, the Peruvian authorities were required to submit a “report on the state of conservation” of Machu Picchu. The outcome: timed entry slots and visiting hours were introduced, and more recently (May 2019), the Peruvian authorities decided to restrict tourist access to two temples and a pyramid: the Temple of the Sun, the Temple of the Condor, and the Intiwatana pyramid. Each day, a maximum of 6,000 tourists, split into two shifts, will have up to three hours to visit the three monuments.
And paradoxically, the Peruvian authorities are making it easier to reach the site by plane at the expense of the environment, even though the train is now the standard.
Peru is thus dancing the tango: one step forward, two steps back!

Your questions / Our answers

After a trip to Peru, I'd like to add an extension — what do you suggest?

It may not be the first idea that comes to mind, but we would suggest a few days in an eco-lodge combining comfort, quality of service and the rainforest experience, at the heart of a private reserve in the Peruvian Amazon. After a tiring journey given the country’s size and altitude, the rainforest is a genuine tropical haven, ideal for recharging.

Does Peru offer a strong hotel infrastructure?

Peru boasts remarkable hotels, with properties from prestigious chains such as Orient Express, now rebranded Belmond, or Relais & Châteaux. We offer outstanding lodges deep into the Amazon, exceptional city hotels, or a private villa on Lake Titicaca. You can enjoy memorable journeys aboard the Orient Express trains from Arequipa or Puno. Or you might choose to travel aboard the luxury Hiram Bingham train to Machu Picchu.

Can Peru meet our appetite for activities?

The Sacred Valley is an outstanding setting for activities such as day or multi-day treks, cycling, horse riding, and workshops with local communities.

What can only be found in Peru?

Unquestionably Machu Picchu, discovered with genuine emotion as it has kept all its magic. Then: the food.
If one had to choose a single country in South America for a culinary journey, it would be Peru. Peruvian gastronomy is now known worldwide, the country home to Michelin-starred chefs. In the 1990s, Peru underwent what could be called a gastronomic revolution, driven by chef Gastón Acurio, originally based in Lima. Our favourite? In Moray, Mil — named after the altitude — is nothing like a classic “fine dining” establishment. At 42, Peruvian chef Virgilio Martinez is the new giant of a responsible gastronomy that celebrates ecosystems. An integrated approach that makes this chef a man of the 21st century. Having lunch at Mil means living an experience with real meaning.

Where to travel as a family with children and teenagers in Latin America?

If we had to pick three, it would be Costa Rica, Mexico and Peru.
Costa Rica, because it’s a small country of nature best explored freely, with a rental car. It offers a genuine playground suited to a host of sporting and fun activities. Each day is punctuated by sightings of turtles, whales, noisy tropical wildlife, volcanoes, bubbling hot springs. We love it!
Mexico, and the Yucatan in particular, because it lets you combine culture, nature and beach without covering long distances, with a rental car.
Peru, because it guarantees a trip punctuated by cultural and sporting activities. And walking the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu will stay etched in your memory forever.
