Tailor-made trip to Thailand

It's impossible to resist the fascination of Bangkok, Chiang Mai and its temples, or the grand remains of the royal cities.
But beyond its cultural richness, Thailand's great appeal remains, without question, the kindness of its people. Isn't it known as the land of smiles?

Formerly called “Siam”, the country came to be known as Thailand, meaning “Land of the Free”. A fitting name.
Across such a vast and contrasting territory, it comes as no surprise to find striking natural features, along with varied vegetation, fauna and flora.
From the mountains of the north to the magnificent beaches of the south, everyone will find their own corner of paradise. The key is to seek out these little-known sites, off the beaten track.

Life — and travel — come easily in the land of teak and elephants, for the Thai people are true masters in the art of hospitality.
The strength of spirituality in this richly contrasted Kingdom of Siam is sure to leave its mark on you.

Expert advice

In one week, you can combine a cultural site or the capital with 3 days by the beach.
A 15-day trip is ideal: it allows a good balance between Bangkok, nearby cultural sites, the northern mountains, and 3 days by the beach.
For an off the beaten track trip, which often requires hiking to reach non-touristic mountain villages, 21 days is ideal.

A word of caution

It can never be said enough: the condition of elephants in Thailand truly demands scrutiny, particularly the specific and cruel ritual known as “phajaan”, literally “the great separation” in Thai, or more plainly, “elephant training through breaking”.
The purpose of this ritual is to “break the spirit” of the young elephant through barbaric methods so that it becomes entirely submissive to humans and obeys without question for the rest of its life, out of fear of punishment.
To do this, men track down a family of wild elephants, then separate the newborn elephant they covet from its mother — even though a calf should stay with its mother for at least 4 years to develop normally, elephants being animals in which maternal bonds are extremely strong.
I won’t describe the act itself here, but I encourage you to research this method and reflect on it.
At Étendues Sauvages, we have made the choice to boycott elephant-back rides for this reason, since they systematically and necessarily rely on this practice to exist in the first place.
