Puno is your starting point for discovering Lake Titicaca, the world's highest navigable lake, where the light is exceptional and the colours have an almost unreal purity. Titicaca is a remarkable inland sea dotted with islands inhabited by local communities: the floating islands of the Uros community, built entirely of reeds; Taquile Island, the largest island on Lake Titicaca, whose community is self-governed; and Isla Suasi, the lake's only privately owned island, belonging to Peruvian sociologist Martha Giraldo, who turned it into an ecological refuge and created a museum dedicated to Andean wildlife, flora and culture.
Puno is also a pleasant stopover, set at the foot of the Altiplano mountains, with its charming cathedral, Plaza de Armas, colourful market and lively local festivals.
Here's an idea: board the Andean Explorer, Belmond's luxury Peruvian train, bound for Cuzco.
