North-west of Salta and Jujuy lie the Salinas Grandes, a 120 km² salt flat at an altitude of over 3,000 meters. Across its vast, arid white expanses, you can observe several flamingo species (James's flamingos, Andean flamingos and Chilean flamingos), or meet local salt workers to learn how they extract salt.
This unique, photogenic landscape continues into the Laguna de Guayatayoc to the north and the Los Flamencos National Reserve (in Chile).
