À vivre

Namibia's capital, perched at 1,654 metres above sea level at the heart of the Khomas Hochland, Windhoek is both the heart and the central nerve of the country, blending history, culture and modernity.

The city's name has evolved over time. Its first inhabitants called it “the place of steam” or “fire water”, after the numerous hot springs surrounding the city.

In the 19th century, the British nicknamed it “Queen Adelaide's Bath”, the Rhenish missionaries called it “the town of Concord”, and the Afrikaners “the winter corner”. At the start of the 20th century, German settlers imposed its current name, “windy corner”, referring to the breezes that blow through the city.

Windhoek grew up around the old fort and the Tintenpalast, the seat of government, while its scattered suburbs give it a quiet, provincial charm.

Its population, drawn from diverse ethnic and cultural backgrounds, contributes to a warm, welcoming atmosphere, making Windhoek a city where hospitality and history meet.
