The Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve (the name means “origin of the sky” in Maya) lies south of Tulum, along the Caribbean coast. A UNESCO World Heritage Site, this strip of land is made up of lagoons, tropical forests, mangroves, jungle and marshland, along with a vast marine area crossed by coral reefs.
It is home to a wide range of fauna and flora: more than 300 bird species have been recorded here, alongside turtles, whales, crocodiles, dolphins, starfish and tropical fish, the latter inhabiting the barrier reef, bays, rocky beaches and reefs characteristic of the State of Quintana Roo, where the reserve is located.
It can be explored on land, following trails through the jungle, or by water, navigating the channels of the mangrove and lagoons — an opportunity to appreciate the ecological treasures of this multifaceted reserve.
