The pre-Columbian stone “mosaics” of the palaces of Mitla are without question the finest in Mexico. This site, located 42 km east of Oaxaca, was a Zapotec city from as early as 100 AD. It reached its peak after the decline of Monte Albán after 750, becoming the civilisation's principal religious site. Most of the buildings visible today date from the three centuries preceding the Spanish invasion.
