Gorongosa, whose name means “place of danger” in the Mwani language, was once one of Africa's most prestigious and well-developed safari destinations, home to some of the highest wildlife densities on the continent.
The park has undergone an ambitious restoration project, hailed as an exemplary model of conservation.
Today, herds of elephants, buffalo and zebra have been successfully reintroduced, while Gorongosa's vast floodplains now hold the largest population of waterbuck found in any protected reserve in Africa.
