Reykjavik, literally the “Bay of Smoke”, is the northernmost capital in the world, and is also Iceland's cultural heart. The city has a charm all its own and is welcoming year-round.
Its streets are lined with traditional Icelandic coloured buildings, and its bars and restaurants are full of life, particularly on Laugavegur, the main street. These, however, do not overshadow the city's rich history, embodied by its museums and the spectacular Hallgrimskirkja, Iceland's tallest building, which also offers a view over the capital from the top of its tower.
Less than an hour from Reykjavik lies the Blue Lagoon, a 200-metre-long hot spring where you can bathe in water of at least 30°C. Despite its off-centre location, the city offers relatively good access to the rest of the island.
As you'll have gathered, Reykjavik is the perfect combination of culture and adventure.
