The Snæfellsnes peninsula (“Snæfell peninsula”), a strip of land reaching into the Atlantic Ocean, is home to imposing mountains, rugged lava fields and striking waterfalls characteristic of Iceland. Human presence is only visible in the fishing villages scattered along the coast.
Though not far from Reykjavik, the peninsula feels almost like another world compared to the capital. The area offers a genuine playground for hikers, and during the winter months it's an ideal spot for watching the northern lights. In summer, a horseback ride or a crossing to Flatey (“the flat island”) or other islands in Breiðafjörður bay is well worth it.
