À vivre

East Iceland is characterized by impressive fjords cloaked in white, surrounded by fertile, wooded valleys home to reindeer, as well as imposing mountains and the Vatnajökull glacier, the largest in Europe. Here, the forces of nature are immense, and man is insignificant.
The eastern fjords are dotted with natural harbors, around which villages grew up in the late 19th century. Every year they host festivals on every imaginable theme and house museums covering a range of historical and natural subjects.
The uninhabited fjords can be explored on foot via passes, valleys and mountain huts, while the islands off the coast are better suited to boat excursions.
