Established in 1872, Yellowstone National Park is the oldest national park in the world. Covering 8,983 km², it is larger than Corsica!
It lies mainly in Wyoming, extending also into Montana and Idaho.
Yellowstone is renowned for its lakes, canyons, rivers, mountains and geothermal phenomena, notably Old Faithful Geyser. It holds two-thirds of the planet's geysers, along with numerous hot springs such as the Grand Prismatic Spring.
Relatively cold, it is also home to vast herds of wild animals adapted to the forested, mountainous terrain of the northwestern United States: black bears, grizzlies, coyotes, wolves, elk, and wild herds of bison and wapiti.
