After spending the summer feeding in Alaska, the gray whale begins its remarkable migration south at the start of winter, heading for the warm waters of Baja California. They travel for 2 to 3 months to breed and give birth. Most gray whales gather in three main bays along the west coast: Laguna Ojo de Liebre, Laguna San Ignacio and Bahía Magdalena. On the Sea of Cortez side, Loreto Bay National Marine Park is the largest protected marine area, home to 30 species of marine mammals and five large rocky islands. Loreto sits at the foot of the imposing Sierra de la Giganta. In February and March, whales are plentiful and easy to find: blue whales, fin whales, humpback whales. Encounters not easily forgotten.
