Surrounded by jungle, Polonnaruwa, one of Sri Lanka's ancient capitals, is gradually being reclaimed by nature. Covered in moss, its ruins are roamed by three monkey species endemic to Sri Lanka: the purple-faced langur, the toque macaque and the grey langur.
Due to habitat destruction caused by humans and the climate change threatening the balance of the country's forests, Sri Lanka's monkeys are under threat. In Polonnaruwa, they are protected by a monkey research centre, allowing their population to grow.
Because of their presence, a visit to Polonnaruwa is not quite like a standard cultural visit: while exploring the site and its history, travellers should keep an eye on these cheeky little primates, as much at ease on the ground as in the trees, who may well play a trick on them.
