The Perito Moreno glacier, one of Argentina's great natural wonders, can be explored on foot during a mini-trek: a close encounter with this mass of ice.
This excursion begins at the Bajo de las Sombras landing (located 6 km before the Perito Moreno glacier viewpoint), from where you cross Lake Rico by boat (around 20 minutes) to reach the opposite shore, facing the glacier's southern wall.
You then reach the refuge, where English- and Spanish-speaking guides organize groups of no more than 20 people. From there, follow the lakeshore for about 20 minutes.
On reaching the glacier's edge, the guides fit you with crampons and explain how to move on the ice. Alongside safety instructions, they share information on the region's flora, fauna, general glaciology, and of course, the particular phenomenon that occurs on this glacier.
Then, crampons on, begin the trek across the glacier itself. For about 1 hour 30 minutes, you walk this enormous mass of ice, from which you get a privileged view over the surrounding lakes and lagoons. During the mini-trek, note the variety of ice formations — fissures, crevasses, small pools, and a few caves.
The ice underfoot is uneven, but firm and safe. Expert guides accompany you throughout.
Return afterward to the refuge, then to the departure port.
Note that an hour of observation is planned either before or after the excursion.
