Each year, two major festivals bring together gauchos from across Argentina: in Salta, in the northwest, in July, and in San Antonio de Areco, in Buenos Aires province, in early November.
This festival is entirely devoted to gaucho culture. Decked out in the essential gear of the horseman — leather boots, flat beret or sombrero, decorated belts, silver knives, mate cups — the gauchos gather together. The program includes equestrian parades, skill games, horse-taming and lasso games, during which the gauchos demonstrate their expertise. Everything is done to impress the crowd.
The festival closes with the traditional parade of gauchos in ceremonial dress, accompanied by brass bands and a vast asado.
