Opportunities to observe marine life through the glass bottom of a boat are plentiful.
But spending the night underwater, comfortably settled in a spacious room “open” to the marine world, is far less common!
Set 4 metres below sea level, it offers a 360° view of the marine world through wide glass walls.
This is how you’ll spend your night, surrounded by trumpetfish, red snapper or the manta rays that are numerous in the Pemba region.
While these “Underwater Rooms” can be found in Sweden, Dubai or the Maldives, this is, to our knowledge, the only such option on the African coast.
Encased in a turquoise-blue bubble, watching shoals of reef fish swim by — sometimes in three or four layers of different species — this is a breathtaking experience.
Inspired by the Utter Inn, a floating hotel on Lake Mälaren in Sweden, the Manta Resort Underwater Room is anchored 250m from the coast and arranged over 3 levels, with the bedroom at the lowest point.
The pontoon, at sea level, includes a lounge and bathroom. A ladder leads to the roof, where a relaxation area awaits — for watching the sun by day and the stars by night.
At night, underwater spotlights on all sides of the room attract the shyest and most unusual creatures, such as squid.
And if you’re claustrophobic, you can finish your night on the upper level, sleeping... under the stars!
Note that Pemba is one of the best diving sites on the entire East African coast, and the Manta Resort includes a Padi dive centre.
