A visit to Bako National Park in Borneo is a must for lovers of flora and fauna: this is prime territory for encountering the park's great apes, including the proboscis monkey, its star species, amid lush, exuberant nature.
Within the park, there's a genuine sense of being at the edge of the world — an ideal setting for observing tropical wildlife deep within its natural habitat, the jungle. There are no roads or vehicles here; access is by boat only.
Bako concentrates an extraordinary range of plants, flowers and animals (37 mammal species, 24 reptile species and 190 bird species). As for the proboscis monkeys, they can be observed at close range, best just before sunset — which is why it's advisable to spend at least one night on site.
This small gem, set between sea and forest, is a peninsula crossed by hiking trails suited to every taste and level.
