The estancia is a true haven of peace at the end of the world, today dedicated to local wildlife; you'll find a small, fascinating museum devoted to marine mammals, seals, and penguins.
The estancia was founded in 1886 by Thomas Bridges. This man received, from Argentine president Julio Roca and the Congress of the time, a vast 20,000-hectare territory as a reward for thirty years of work and care devoted to the Yahgan communities who roamed the area. Until the 1990s, this estancia lived mainly off the income from the 12,000 sheep that grazed the valleys and peaks of this vast property.
The estancia became a strategic site when, in 1978, war broke out between Argentina and Chile over three small islands (Picton, Lennox, and Nueva) marking the entrance to the Beagle Channel. A road was built, ending the site's total isolation.
