Svínafellsjökull glacier is part of the largest ice cap in Europe, at the heart of Vatnajökull National Park. It is one of the country’s most popular spots for glacier hiking, thanks to its extraordinary formations and sweeping views.
Svínafellsjökull is roughly 1,000 years old and is known as one of Iceland’s bluest glaciers, its ice streaked with bright white snow and veins of black ash, traces of eruptions from centuries past. Set within a dreamlike landscape, with deep, striking crevasses and formations that seem to belong to another world, Svínafellsjökull has served as the filming location for numerous world-famous films and TV series, including Batman Begins, Interstellar and Game of Thrones. In terms of location, Svínafellsjökull lies close to Jökulsárlón, a stunning glacier lagoon filled with giant icebergs.
