Opened in 2011 on the initiative of owners Fabia and Nicolas, a French-Swiss couple passionate about safaris and African wildlife, Chem Chem Tarangire sits within a private 4,000-hectare concession between Tarangire National Park and the shores of Lake Manyara — an ideal spot for those drawn to big cats and the migratory birds that pass through.
Thanks to the exclusivity of the concession, Chem Chem can arrange walking safaris with a private guide. This authentic experience lets you immerse yourself in this environment, observe it, touch it, even smell it!
A true way of life, where safaris are mostly conducted on foot alongside a Maasai guide, in total immersion with the bush, taking the time to appreciate every minute and every sensation.

Layout

Set between the vast plains and forests of Tarangire National Park and the calm waters of Lake Manyara, Chem Chem Tarangire is nestled in a palm oasis with a magnificent panoramic view of the western escarpment of the Rift Valley.
The camp is located within a private concession, designated by the government as a wildlife conservation area. 6 spacious and intimate tents, inspired by vintage safari style but with contemporary touches, await you for a stay centred on authenticity.
Whether you prefer to explore the reserve and observe wildlife by 4x4 or wander through the lush forests, absorbed in their beauty and serenity, there is no doubt you will have a front-row seat whatever happens! A unique setting, right at the heart of nature: if you listen closely, you'll hear lions roaring and calling to one another during the night.
You may also see elephants bathing in Lake Burunge, not far from the camp, and if you're lucky, perhaps spot a cheetah hunting along the lake's shores. Antelope and leopards, meanwhile, can be observed on safaris within the concession's inland areas.

Activities are numerous — walking or horseback safaris, picnics on the lake shore or beneath ancient baobabs — there's plenty to do.
Creators of the concept, Fabia and Nicolas, the owners, favour the “Slow Safari” approach: taking the time on foot to discover and appreciate the bush for what it is, rather than forcing an encounter with the animals, instead waiting for it and savouring it.
