Horton Plains
Thotalagala is steeped in history; it sits on the Pitaratmalie estate, part of the Agarapatana plantations, a group of estates covering nearly 8,000 hectares of high-grade tea produced in Sri Lanka. The neighbouring estate is Dambatenne, arguably the most famous estate in all of Sri Lanka. Dambatenne is one of the only estates in the world that Sir Thomas Lipton planted himself. The term “Ceylon tea” was coined here, and the Lipton's Tea company was founded and sold its first pound of tea within the grounds of the factory that still stands today. Guests at Thotalagala will have exclusive access to the factory and to the bungalow that was Sir Thomas Lipton's residence from 1890 to 1910.
Thotalagala bungalow is surrounded by 6 hectares of lawn and patana grassland. From the edge of the lawn, a panoramic view unfolds before you. Behind the bungalow, covering the Haputale hills, 4,000 hectares of tea stretch out to the Lipton seat, 1,500 feet above, and onto the Bandarawela side of the mountain. The seven suites are the quintessence of colonial luxury. The teak-panelled smoking room is the ideal place to retire for a cognac after dinner. The dining room itself, with its twenty-seat table, is a place to savour the plantation's hearty traditional dishes. This is also a working estate, and guests can immerse themselves in the traditional way of life of a tea planter.
Each of the seven suites is dedicated to the memory of a gentleman who played an essential role in the development of the province. These suites celebrate the distinctiveness of their namesakes, while serving as lavish tributes to the designs, hues, forms and concepts that characterised the British colonial era in Sri Lanka. Step back in time and discover the height of comfort and luxury.
The rooms include a desk. Their private bathroom is fitted with toiletries.
