While the northern lights light up the winter sky, the midnight sun, also known as the polar day, is a natural phenomenon that occurs north of the Arctic Circle during summer. Why does this happen? Because the Earth rotates on an axis tilted relative to the Sun, and during the summer months, the North Pole is oriented toward it. The length of this period of daylight increases with latitude: it reaches its minimum, a single day, at the Arctic Circle (66°), and its maximum, six months, at the North Pole (90°).

This is therefore a phenomenon that can be experienced, to varying degrees, in the far north of Canada, in Alaska, Greenland, Svalbard and Lapland. The Svalbard archipelago is one of the places where the polar day lasts longest, as the sun does not set there from late April to late August.
At latitudes a few degrees below the Arctic Circle (down to around 60°), as in Iceland for example, another phenomenon occurs around the summer solstice. This is the white night, a night during which the sun, although below the horizon, does not drop far enough to allow true darkness to fall.

This natural phenomenon will throw off your sense of time and will almost certainly disrupt your body clock: beyond the difficulty of sleeping with light still present, a certain euphoria can set in, along with a reduced need for sleep. Make the most of this extra time to explore the surroundings and capture a few shots of the sun-filled night.
