Namibie
Namib Rand Reserve
The largest private reserve in Southern Africa, offering 140,000 hectares of breathtakingly beautiful wilderness. The limited number of lodges in this reserve (four at present) and the small number of beds per camp ensure untouched spaces for guests. The dunes here are lower, but far less frequented, and the landscapes display a dazzling variety. NamibRand Nature Reserve offers unique conditions for discovery.
The 10 tented rooms open onto magnificent desert panoramas and were built to maximise the views from every corner of the room.
Each has a private veranda giving access to expanses of untouched sand. In fact, we strongly recommend sleeping with the blinds open to feel the gentle evening breeze and marvel at the vast, star-studded sky.
The expansive main complex is built on a series of walkways over the sand.
There are two lounges, several terraces for sunbathing, a terrace for afternoon tea, a library, a wine cellar and two dining rooms.
The former swimming pool has become a productive vegetable garden that supplies the kitchen with organic ingredients.
There are ten chalets, including a family suite comprising two bedrooms that share a bathroom and a veranda.
Built on slightly raised two-level decks, the rooms are furnished with luxurious solid-wood four-poster beds draped in mosquito nets, a desk, a table, a luggage rack and several comfortable chairs.
Each chalet has a private bathroom with a solar-powered shower, two basins and various complimentary amenities.
The Mountain View Suite, considerably larger (and slightly more expensive), is set just around the corner from the other suites, giving it complete privacy. It comes with a private guide and vehicle, its own chef (and a small kitchen), a dining room and a pool for exclusive use.
Activities focus on the striking landscapes and mainly take the form of 4x4 drives through the private reserve.
The reserve is home to a wide variety of wildlife (including elusive predators such as leopards, cheetahs, brown hyenas, Cape foxes and caracals), though spotting them is extremely difficult.
You stand a better chance of seeing gemsbok (oryx), springbok, zebra and black-backed jackals.
A morning excursion to Namib-Naukluft Park to see some of the famous dunes (Big Daddy and Dune 45, as well as Dead Vlei) is a must, though expect to share it with a few (hundred) other visitors.
Other activities, such as hot-air ballooning, horse riding and scenic flights, are available at an extra cost.
