À vivre

Experience something truly exceptional by exploring the Silfra fissure, at the heart of Þingvellir National Park. Here, the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates are slowly drifting apart, creating a spectacular underwater landscape where you'll quite literally feel as though you're swimming between two continents.

Wearing a drysuit, mask and snorkel, you'll glide through exceptionally pure glacial water, naturally filtered for decades through volcanic rock. Its clarity allows for visibility exceeding 100 metres, revealing extraordinary shades of blue, towering rock walls and fascinating volcanic formations.

Experienced divers can also discover Silfra by scuba diving. This experience, however, is reserved for divers holding the required certifications and experience, particularly in drysuit diving.

A silent, almost unreal immersion into one of Iceland's most extraordinary natural environments. Far more than a simple water activity, Silfra is a once-in-a-lifetime experience.

Seasons

Our seasonal advice

Snorkelling in the Silfra fissure is practised year-round, with each season offering a different atmosphere.

From June to August, outdoor temperatures are milder and the very long summer days allow full enjoyment of the Þingvellir landscapes. This is also the busiest period.

April, May, September and October offer a very good balance, with generally lower visitor numbers and particularly beautiful landscapes in spring or autumn colours.

From November to March, the experience takes on an entirely different dimension: surrounded by the snow-covered landscapes of Þingvellir, the fissure offers an almost otherworldly setting. The water temperature remains roughly the same year-round, but outdoor conditions are naturally colder.
