À vivre

Simply fascinating, Dynjandi has for decades been one of the emblematic images of the Westfjords, and its beauty continues to impress. The tallest and widest section of the waterfall naturally draws every eye and every photographer, even though several other, smaller but equally remarkable falls punctuate the river below.

The waterfall and its surroundings have been protected as a natural monument since 1981, a testament to the exceptional and precious character of this site.

Dynjandi cascades down the mountain over roughly 100 meters. Its stepped shape is explained by the area's particular geology: the rock is made up of a succession of lava layers and softer intermediate strata. The lava layers form the different tiers, while over time the river has gradually carved away the more fragile layers.

Dynjandi is made up of six waterfalls in total. From the top, they follow one another: Fjallfoss, Hundafoss, Strokkur, Göngumannafoss, Hrísvaðsfoss and Sjóarfoss.

To take in the landscape fully, follow the trail to reach the main part of the waterfall. A short walk rewarded with a spectacular panorama, the roar of the water and the bracing air of the Westfjords.

Seasons

Our seasonal advice

To discover Dynjandi, the best period runs from June to September, when the roads of the Westfjords are more easily accessible.

June is particularly pleasant: long days, very green landscapes and a powerful waterfall thanks to snowmelt. July and August offer the most favourable conditions for travelling around the Westfjords, with milder temperatures and excellent accessibility. September is a fine alternative, calmer and with magnificent autumn light, but the weather becomes more changeable.

In winter and early spring, access can be much more difficult due to snow, ice and sometimes challenging road conditions.
