Ponant Commandant Charcot cruise
Croisières et Yachting Groenland
15 days / 14 nights
May-June 2023
This unprecedented 15-day itinerary offers a rare opportunity to discover one of the most difficult-to-reach areas of the High Arctic, in spring — a hostile season when ice and snow are still omnipresent.
Setting off from Reykjavik, here are the key stages of your cruise:
– the Ittoqqortoormiit region, home to a small Greenlandic community. This is one of the most remote inhabited places in the world. For nine months of the year the region is covered in ice and snow. This stage will let you discover the ancestral way of life of the last hunters of the pole.
– Northeast Greenland National Park, the largest national park in the world and a UNESCO biosphere reserve. Here nature dominates: alpine landscapes in unreal colours and powerful glaciers form the backdrop as far as the eye can see. No trace of human presence, but polar bears reign supreme. You may have the chance to spot a male in search of food, or a mother with her cub.
The ship will attempt to reach the northern part of the national park, weather and ice conditions permitting. The goal is to reach Île de France, a legendary site of French polar expeditions, discovered by the Duke of Orléans in 1905.
