New Zealand journey, Doubtful Sound cruise

Example of a tailor-made journey, fully customisable

Country

Nouvelle-Zélande

Suggested duration

4 days / 3 nights

The spirit of the journey

Ten times larger than Milford Sound, Doubtful Sound offers a wild, ever-changing beauty — at times clear, blue and sunlit, at others mysterious and mist-covered. A wild expanse of dense rainforest, steep peaks, waterfalls and calm deep waters, the place is quiet, restful and green.

Watch closely for wildlife such as bottlenose dolphins, which often swim alongside the boat, fur seals basking on the rocks around the fjord, and the occasional rare penguin sighting.

Not to be missed.

TE ANAU
Upon arrival in Queenstown, pick up your rental vehicle and drive to Te Anau.
The calm, deep waters of Lake Te Anau form the largest lake on the South Island, and the second largest in New Zealand. Its western shore is bordered by lush, dense forest. The pretty town of Te Anau sits on the edge of this remarkable lake, with Mount Luxmore and the Murchison Mountains as a backdrop.
Te Anau is the “gateway to the fjords”, being the closest town to Doubtful Sound, just 20 minutes away.

DOUBTFUL SOUND
This morning, drive to Manapouri, about 20 minutes from Te Anau.
You will first be transferred by boat to the far shore of Lake Manapouri.
Lake Manapouri is often described as the most beautiful of all the lakes, with its 33 small islands, the backdrop of “Cathedral Mountain”, fine sand beaches and coves. Originally named Roto-au (lake of the rains) by Māori, then Moturau (many islands), it is New Zealand’s second deepest lake.
An English-speaking representative will be waiting on the other shore to take you to the departure wharf for your cruise.
Boarding the Tutoko II, your home for the next 22 hours. Meet the crew and your boat, a glass of champagne, and you’re off on an extraordinary journey through Doubtful Sound.
Sometimes called “The Sound of Silence”, Doubtful Sound carries a particular stillness, far less visited than its neighbour Milford Sound. The fjord supports rich wildlife and vegetation. At 421 metres deep, it is the deepest fjord in the region. Long and winding, it splits into 3 distinct arms.

During this cruise you will discover breathtaking landscapes. Your English-speaking captain will share the history of the region and how the fjord was formed.

You’ll enjoy fine food, including freshly caught crayfish. Watch for numerous seal colonies, dolphins, and — if you’re lucky — “tawaki” in their nests, the local penguins. Before dinner, you can choose to relax on deck or take a kayak out to explore further. Several other activities are available, including fishing, swimming or diving. This is a chance to share a convivial moment while discovering this extraordinary natural environment.

QUEENSTOWN
Don’t hesitate to rise early to catch the sunrise. Why not have breakfast while taking in the stillness of this place. Around midday, arrival at the wharf and disembarkation.
Then, drive to Queenstown.
Queenstown is a mountain resort town set between lake and peaks. It is well known for extreme sports, but also for its gastronomy, lake cruises, thermal spas, shopping and golf.
Rest of the day free to explore the town at your own pace.

In summary:
– 1 night in Te Anau at a boutique hotel
– 1 night on Doubtful Sound aboard a boat
– 1 night in Queenstown at a boutique hotel
