Yangon

DAYS 3 AND 4: BAGAN
Optional: hot-air balloon flight over the Bagan plain at sunrise.

Stroll through the lively Nyaung U market, then visit Shwezigon pagoda: the elegant bell shape of its golden stupa became the model for all stupas subsequently built in Myanmar.
Visit the main monuments of Old Bagan: the ruins of the Royal Palace and the Tharabar gate, Ananda Temple, a jewel of Burmese architecture with its 4 immense Buddha statues, and Ananda Okkyaung, one of the last remaining brick monasteries.
Lunch on the banks of the Irrawaddy river.
Another day exploring the Bagan archaeological site, by traditional bicycle or electric scooter (your choice).
Late afternoon, sundowner cruise on the Irrawaddy river to watch the sunset.

DAYS 5 AND 6: KALAW REGION
The large lake overlooking this Shan village in the shade of tall banyan trees adds to the peaceful atmosphere of Pindaya.
Explore the caves housing thousands of Buddha statues, along with local craft workshops, including an umbrella factory.
Continue on to Kalaw, a hill station built by the British during the colonial era.
Drive through the Shan mountains to reach the “Green Hill Valley” elephant camp.
Beyond the tourist attraction itself, you will learn to feed and bathe the elephants in the river, spending time with these large, gentle animals.

DAYS 7 AND 8: INLE LAKE
Inle Lake is one of Myanmar’s gems. Set at nearly 900 metres’ elevation amid the hills of Shan State, home to ethnic communities such as the Pa-O, Inle Lake is known for its Intha fishermen and their distinctive leg-rowing technique, its lakeside villages and its floating tomato plantations.
Boat trip on a local canoe to explore the lake.
Visit a “five-day market”, floating gardens, and walk through lakeside villages to observe the way of life of the Intha, who have developed highly distinctive navigation, fishing and farming techniques.
You will also have the chance to see Ngaphe Chaung monastery and Phaung Daw Oo pagoda.
The day culminates with a visit to Indein village on the shores of Inle Lake. This archaeological site comprises around a hundred 15th-century pagodas, some of them overgrown by vegetation.

Lac Inle
