Tiger safaris and the Bateshwar fair

Example of a tailor-made journey, fully customizable

Country

Suggested duration

12 days / 10 nights

The spirit of the journey

The Bateshwar fair takes place in November, first with the animal fair, then with the religious festival.
For this specific program, no Pushkar fair, seen, overseen, and seen again.
Beyond the very heavy tourist influx, Pushkar has today become a haven for young Westerners who imagine they have found paradise there. But it is not Brahma they have encountered in Pushkar. Only artificial paradises and their illicit substances.
So, since you are not coming to India for this disheartening observation, we favor the authenticity of a fair on a human scale: that of Bateshwar.
The same atmosphere as Pushkar... in its early days!
A tailor-made journey combining culture and nature, inseparable in India.

RANTHAMBORE
Ranthambore and its famous Tiger Reserve!
The park’s landscape is made up of lakes and streams, most of which run dry for the greater part of the year.
For tiger sightings under the best conditions, Ranthambore is certainly one of the parks where it is easiest to see tigers… provided you draw the right route number!
Wednesday is a pilgrimage day in Ranthambore park, an occasion to combine a tiger safari with a procession.
A special moment if your stay in Ranthambore coincides with this day.

Rajasthan - Parc national de Ranthambore

Area: 1,334 km², of which 400 km² are open for safari. Ranthambore, a former princely hunting ground some two hundred kilometres southwest of Delhi, once held barely fifteen tigers. Today it is one of the world's best-known parks for tiger sightings. Encountering a tiger here is a rare experience — Ranthambore is where it allows itself to be glimpsed. Whatever fear it inspires, Bengalis hold the tiger to be magical, and venerate it. This exceptional stay, devoted to tracking and observing the most legendary of all big cats, is timed for the best season: the dry months. As vegetation thirsts for the coming monsoon and water becomes scarce, animals are easier to spot around the remaining waterholes — among them sambar deer, chital, Indian gazelle, sloth bear and leopard. Within the park, tigers move among the many ruined pavilions, Hindu and Mughal in style, scattered across a landscape of cliffs and lakes, jungle and hills scorched by the Rajasthan sun. The abandoned hunting lodges and the ruined palace of a former Maharajah, set atop a ridge, together with the permanent lakes, hills, forests and plains, give the site a distinct atmosphere and make for striking photography.
With some luck, you may spot leopards, jungle cats, hyenas, four-horned antelope, wild boar, jackals, or a tiger — all part of the wildlife inhabiting this reserve dotted with carved ruins.

CHAMBAL AND THE BATESHWAR FAIR
Chambal is a fine stop along the way.
This stay will be an opportunity for an excursion on the Chambal River in search of a very rich fauna, including the Gangetic dolphin, one of the area’s major attractions; you don’t expect it, in the middle of nowhere, in the heart of India, but encountering this rare river cetacean remains a moving experience. Migratory birds and other species are also present.

It is also from Chambal that you will set off for a day excursion to the small village of Bateshwar, known for its Shaivite temples on the banks of the sacred Yamuna River. Every year, the village and the river come alive in an explosion of color during the fine cattle fair held during “Diwali”, the festival of lights…
In October-November, the open grounds around the Bateshwar temple host an annual animal fair whose origins date back to Antiquity. A fixture of the Hindu religious calendar, the fair is also of major commercial importance and is recognized as the second-largest animal fair in the country.
The animal fair is followed, ten days later, by the religious fair.
A colorful spectacle of rural India, as unchanging as it is timeless.
