Beach extension in Mozambique after a safari: the Bazaruto archipelago

Tailor-made trip extension, fully customisable

Country

Afrique du Sud Mozambique

Suggested duration

5 days / 4 nights

Ideal periods

April to October

The spirit of the journey

After the big cats observed through a telephoto lens, time for silence and slowness: the white sand beaches of the Bazaruto archipelago, in Mozambique, form the ideal extension to a southern Africa safari. A still-unspoiled sanctuary of serenity, surrounded by turquoise waters and set with five small tropical islands and their idyllic beaches.

An open-air theatre
Here, the tides sculpt a landscape of rare contrast: sandbanks of varying widths, an endless gradient of blue and green. The ocean sets the pace, and it is the ocean that determines swimming hours.
When the fishermen return, the beach comes alive. Women and children from neighbouring villages come to meet them, in a flurry of colourful clothing and beaming faces, the Indian Ocean stretching to the horizon. A moment suspended in time.

Four barefoot luxury addresses
On Benguerra Island, barefoot luxury reaches its peak, with andBeyond Benguerra Island, Azura Benguerra Island, Azura Marlin Beach and Kisawa Sanctuary. On the neighbouring island of Bazaruto, Anantara Bazaruto Island offers understated luxury and rustic charm.
Privacy and romance reign here, in a perfectly relaxed atmosphere.

Diving, dhow sailing and marine life
Translucent lagoons, tropical fish, turtles, dolphins, humpback whales from July to October, and dugongs: the archipelago, designated a national park, is home to the last viable population of these mammals in the region. Diving, a sunset dhow cruise, a picnic on a sandbank, fishing or simply doing nothing: each day can be shaped as you wish.

A simple addition to your safari
From Johannesburg, or even Kruger Park, a flight takes you to Vilanculos, then a helicopter or boat continues on to the island of your choice.
Four nights are enough for a complete change of scenery.
The ideal period runs from April to October, and as always with Étendues Sauvages, the extension is fully customisable.

BAZARUTO ARCHIPELAGO
Arrival at Vilanculos airport, reached from Johannesburg.
A helicopter or a boat will take you to Bazaruto Island, or to the even more exclusive Benguerra Island.

On Benguerra Island, the concept of “barefoot luxury” is at its height. It is home to the archipelago’s 3 finest addresses: andBeyond Benguerra Island, Azura and Kisawa.

Privacy and romance are the cornerstones of any stay at these remarkable luxury lodges.
Yet the atmosphere remains perfectly relaxed, with a laid-back island feel.

Set off to explore translucent lagoons where myriad tropical fish dart about, alongside turtles, whales, dolphins and Africa’s last dugongs.
Between moments of quiet contemplation, take up diving, then sail across shimmering waters at sunset aboard a traditional dhow.

andBeyond Benguerra Island Lodge

The other island, Bazaruto, is home to the Anantara, slightly less exclusive but perfectly in keeping with the archipelago’s promise.
A haven of peace where days are spent relaxing on a perfect beach, enjoying freshly prepared local cuisine and being pampered at the spa.

Depending on the mood: lazing about, a sunset dhow cruise, boat excursions to discover the archipelago’s endemic species, observing marine and terrestrial wildlife (loggerhead turtles, dugongs, crocodiles, butterflies, humpback whales, dolphins), water sports, fishing, a picnic on a sandbank…
