Cape Town and Okavango Safari Journey: South Africa and Botswana

Example of a tailor-made journey, fully customisable

Country

Afrique du Sud Botswana

Suggested duration

10 days / 7 nights

Ideal periods

May to November

The spirit of the journey

This combined journey links two destinations that seem to oppose each other yet, in fact, complement one another perfectly: Cape Town, one of the most captivating cities in the world, and the Okavango Delta in Botswana, a natural sanctuary listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Urban culture and vast wilderness: southern Africa in all its diversity.

The journey begins in Cape Town, fully independent, with your own rental vehicle. Table Mountain, the beaches of Camps Bay, the Cape Peninsula and the winelands of Stellenbosch and Franschhoek make up a rich programme, at your own pace. The city is explored freely, without an assigned guide. A pause before immersion in the bush.

You then continue on to the Okavango Delta in Botswana. Elephants, lions, leopards, hippos and an exceptional birdlife populate this unique ecosystem, where the waters of the Kalahari disappear without ever reaching the sea. Safaris by 4x4, on foot, and by mokoro along the Okavango's silent channels. Each mode of exploration reveals a different facet of this untouched territory.

Short in duration, intense in experience: this Cape Town – Okavango itinerary is designed for those who want to live two Africas in a single journey, without compromising on quality or authenticity.

CAPE TOWN AND SURROUNDS
For these first four days, Cape Town is yours to explore.

With a rental car, you have full freedom to shape your own programme, day by day, at your own pace. The autonomy South Africa offers, with the possibility of exploring the country by private vehicle, is a real asset.

Cape Town, ringed by nature and dramatic landscapes, lends itself particularly well to this kind of independent exploration.

Activities are plentiful and will appeal to all ages. You can wander through the city’s landmark neighbourhoods — Kloof Street, Bo Kaap, the famous Waterfront with its vast aquarium, Table Mountain — or head out to the Cape of Good Hope peninsula along the renowned Chapman’s Peak Drive, or take the ferry to Robben Island…

A little further on, about an hour’s drive away, the whole of the region’s celebrated winelands awaits.

Cape Town, Afrique du Sud

Le Cap et sa région

Mother city of South Africa, Cape Town is the largest city on the continent, instantly recognisable for its setting between Table Mountain and the Atlantic Ocean, in what is known as the City Bowl.

Though African, the city still bears the marks of its European past, visible in its colonial architecture blending Georgian, Dutch and Oriental styles, its public gardens and its eclectic cuisine.

Highlights include Table Mountain, offering views over the city, the ocean and the Winelands from its 1,087 m summit, Robben Island, and the Victoria & Albert Waterfront, former docks converted into a shopping and cultural centre. Along with Long Street, the city's lively main avenue, its long, precisely aligned shopping streets and the colourful houses of the Bo-Kaap, the Cape Malay quarter set along the mountain slopes, give the city its charm.

Nearby lies the Cape Winelands, dotted with mountain vineyards and villages with clean-lined white Dutch architecture.

Along the coast, Cape Point lighthouse offers a striking view over the local peak, the “Bowl” and the ocean horizon, as well as the granite beaches frequented by African penguins.

From the top of Signal Hill, enjoy the view over Table Bay harbour and watch the Noon Gun fire every day at midday.

Set against Table Mountain, the city's beaches draw in hardy swimmers and witness the annual whale migration: this striking combination, set within such an iconic landscape, is likely behind the city's nickname, “the tavern of the seas”.

OKAVANGO DELTA
Today, fly to Maun in Botswana, gateway to the Okavango Delta.
On arrival, a light aircraft flight takes you to your lodge for the next three nights, at the heart of this remarkable ecosystem.
The Okavango Delta is made up of lagoons, floodplains and islands fringed with trees and palms: a striking setting, further enriched by a wealth of wildlife species.

During your stay, two safaris a day are included, in an open 4×4 with the lodge’s expert English-speaking guide. Safaris take place early morning and late afternoon, when animals are most active.

The lodge’s location allows you to experience several types of safari: by 4×4, by boat, by mokoro (the region’s traditional dugout canoe) and sometimes on foot.
A way to take in the Okavango’s character from several different angles.

Delta de l'Okavango,

Delta de l'Okavango

The Okavango, the river that never reaches the sea. A delta that gradually vanishes into the Kalahari Desert, in Botswana.
Picture an ever-shifting maze: only the most experienced guides can find their way through it.

The Okavango Delta is without doubt one of the most majestic landscapes in southern Africa, and safaris here are legendary.

Although the delta is permanent, water levels vary throughout the year. As a result, exploring this vast mosaic of river channels, lagoons, islands and floodplains is done by mokoro, motorboat, on foot or by 4x4.

Wildlife of a diversity rarely matched elsewhere reigns supreme here. The delta is home to one of the largest elephant populations in Africa, along with all the major predators.
In the dry season, it is common to see hundreds of elephants in a single day. Lions and leopards are often part of the scene, and it is not unusual to come across African wild dogs in certain parts of Moremi, Chief Island or Linyanti.

As with a masterwork, it is from a distance or from above that one truly grasps its beauty, among winding lagoons.

But come closer, quietly, without a sound…
You will discover the details that make up the richness of this work. Here, African life pulses at the water's edge.
