The spirit of the journey

A land of superlatives, Newfoundland offers a unique adventure in preserved territory. Majestic icebergs, untamed whales, powerful Atlantic swells, picturesque colourful houses, artist galleries and distinctive architecture...

Welcome to an isolated territory at the edge of the world, waiting to share its secrets.

Two exceptional territories for a first, unhurried approach to this island: the provincial capital Saint John's, a charming, human-scale coastal city, followed by the already legendary Fogo Island Inn, for total immersion in Newfoundland culture.

SAINT JOHN’S
Begin with a visit to the provincial capital, Saint John’s, to get a sense of island life. You’ll find a lively city perched above the ocean on the rocky coastline that defines Newfoundland’s wild landscape.

Enjoy a half-day excursion with a private local guide to explore the sights around Saint John’s. You’ll discover Cape Spear lighthouse, the sweeping view over the provincial capital from Signal Hill, and Cabot Tower, built at the highest point of Signal Hill to commemorate the 400th anniversary of John Cabot’s discovery of Newfoundland.

You’ll be charmed by the colourful façades, won over by the pervasive artistic spirit, and struck by the change of scenery at the fishing village of Ferryland, where your private driver will take you on the third day. After a short walk to the lighthouse, you’ll be rewarded with a remarkable picnic enjoyed along the rugged shoreline, overlooking the Atlantic Ocean.

FOGO ISLAND
Fogo Island is not easy to reach: the privilege of isolation has to be earned. After a flight between Saint John’s and Gander, a ferry between Farewell and Fogo Island, and a few drives along the way to take in the scenery, you’ll finally reach the comfort of an extraordinary property: Fogo Island Inn.

Activities and adventures on Fogo Island centre on sharing time with the islanders, whether through a hike along the spectacular coastline, traditional cod fishing, a boat excursion to see icebergs, or a meeting with a local boatbuilder who crafts authentic wooden punts. Fogo Island Inn also offers a programme with local guides, designed to showcase the island, its heritage, and the compelling people who live there.

Fogo Island Inn

Fogo Island Inn is located on an island, off an island, at one of the four corners of the Earth.
A bracing relief from the anxious uniformity of modern times, this award-winning inn is built on principles of sustainability and respect for nature and culture.

The inn offers floor-to-ceiling views of the sea and sky from its 29 rooms. It includes a dining room, a bar, a library, an art gallery, a cinema space and a relaxation area with sauna.

Rooms on the third and fourth floors all include wood-burning stoves. The ceilings of the fourth-floor rooms follow the dramatic pitch of the roof. As a result, the three easternmost rooms enjoy double-height volumes with the sleeping area set on a mezzanine. Particular care was taken to ensure exceptional soundproofing, so that visitors hear only the sound of the nearby ocean waves. All the inn's rooms were built using only natural materials such as wood, wool, cotton and linen. The only plastic in the rooms is the telephone.

The fourth-floor rooftop terrace houses the inn's wood-fired saunas and two outdoor hot tubs.
