The spirit of the journey

On this getaway, you’ll discover the riches of southern Namibia — unique landscapes that complement the country’s essential sites.

Among them, Fish River Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon. It is also Africa’s largest canyon, stretching 160 km in length and 27 km in width. An impressive landscape, panoramas as far as the eye can see, and surprising biodiversity despite the aridity of the terrain.

On the road to the canyon, you’ll have the chance to observe horses still living wild, roaming freely across the expanses of southern Namibia.
You’ll also discover the first stretches of the Kalahari Desert, and meet the San people (Bushmen) to share in their experiences.

An additional leg of your Namibian journey, during which you’ll feel utterly alone in the world, in complete harmony with nature.

The itinerary and selected lodges can be adjusted to your preferences when designing your tailor-made journey.

HELMERINGHAUSEN
This morning, you’ll leave Sesriem and the Namib Desert and head south.
After a 4.5-hour drive, you’ll settle in at Helmeringhausen, where you can take a horseback ride or explore the raw, desert surroundings at sunset.
On the way, you may visit Duwisib Castle, a 19th-century building resembling a medieval fortress.

One-night stay at a charming lodge.

LÜDERITZ
Route to Lüderitz, a former German town that has retained its old Bavarian atmosphere.
Along the way, make a detour to observe the wild horses still roaming the Namib Desert.

One-night stay at a hotel with ocean views.

FISH RIVER CANYON
Before heading to Fish River Canyon, you may visit the ghost town of Kolmanskop, a former mining town in the middle of the desert. You can also observe African penguins on Halifax Island and Cape fur seals at Diaz Point during a boat cruise.

Continue south to reach Fish River Canyon, the second-largest canyon in the world after the Grand Canyon. The following day, you’ll set off with the lodge’s guide for a full-day excursion to explore the canyon.

Two-night stay at a lodge perched on the canyon’s edge, offering spectacular views.

Excursions available through the lodge: 4×4 drive into the canyon, guided walk at sunrise or sunset, full-day hiking or cycling.

Fish River Canyon

This spectacular canyon, the second longest in the world, has nothing to envy its famous American counterpart. For those drawn to rocky desert landscapes, a few extra hours of driving beyond Namibia's most visited sites are well worth it.

Stretching 161 km in length, 27 km in width and reaching depths of 550 m, this gigantic ravine offers breathtaking panoramas at every turn. With a bit of luck, you may spot discreet but fascinating wildlife: zebras, baboons, or klipspringers moving skillfully across the cliffs.

To make the most of this natural jewel, the best approach is to stop at the numerous viewpoints along the road or to explore the canyon on guided hikes, which allow you to appreciate its striking relief and unique perspectives over the surrounding desert.

MARIENTAL AND THE KALAHARI DESERT
Route to the small town of Mariental, on the edge of the Kalahari Desert.
You may make a detour to visit the Kokerboom (quiver tree) forest before settling into a charming lodge, where you can observe numerous herbivores, a family of meerkats, and watch the cheetahs being fed. At sunset, you’ll have the opportunity for an immersion in the Kalahari dunes.

One-night stay in Mariental before returning to Windhoek.
Before leaving, a guided walk with the San people (Bushmen) is also possible.

Désert du Kalahari

The Kalahari Desert, spanning nearly 900,000 km², covers part of southeastern Namibia as well as several other southern African countries. Its name, from the Tswana language, literally means “place without water.” Yet despite its designation as a “desert,” the Kalahari has a semi-arid climate, with average annual rainfall of around 100 mm (compared to just 25 mm for a true desert).

This vast region fascinates with its diversity and authenticity. It offers the opportunity to meet the Nama people and the San, whose traditional way of life is still preserved. Its sparsely visited plains create a genuine sense of isolation, dotted with centuries-old baobabs and at times almost lunar landscapes.

Despite the aridity, wildlife and flora here are remarkably varied: antelopes, meerkats, birds and other species adapted to extreme conditions, making the Kalahari a unique destination for adventurers and nature lovers.
