The spirit of the journey

The Makgadikgadi pans are one of Botswana's best-kept secrets. East of the Okavango Delta, at the edge of the Kalahari, lies one of the largest salt pan networks in the world. A territory of mineral, almost lunar beauty, where the silence is so complete it becomes an experience in itself.

In the green season, from December to March, the rains transform these salt flats into lush grasslands. This triggers one of Africa's great land migrations: tens of thousands of zebras converge on Makgadikgadi, followed by their predators — lions, hyenas, cheetahs. A spectacle still little known to the wider public, made all the more striking by a landscape without equal on the continent.

Makgadikgadi is also home to two species that the most demanding naturalists come specifically to see. Meerkats, first: accustomed to human presence in certain sectors of the reserve, they allow approach to within a few metres at sunrise, a rare and moving proximity. The brown hyena, second — one of the most elusive and rare species in southern Africa — for which Makgadikgadi offers exceptional conditions for nocturnal observation.

In the dry season, the pans return to their mineral, spectacular character. The horizon disappears into an absolute whiteness, wildlife concentrates around water points, and nights under the stars reach an intensity few places on earth can match.

Makgadikgadi fits naturally as an extension to a classic Botswana itinerary: three or four nights are ideal to capture its essence. But the destination also deserves to be experienced as a journey in its own right, for those seeking an Africa that is raw, silent and radically different from the Okavango.

THE MAKGADIKGADI PANS
An empty expanse of white sand and salt, once the bed of an 80,000 km² lake that disappeared over 10 millennia ago.
An infinite horizon where sky and earth merge into one. A territory frequented by rare Bushmen, brown hyenas and meerkats.

It is within this immensity that we propose a three-night stay.

The already lunar landscape of the Makgadikgadi is the ideal place to turn your gaze skyward.
Leave camp under an ink-black sky and join an astronomy expert for an evening of stargazing.
Known as one of the darkest places on the planet, the Makgadikgadi offers a magnificent view of the star-studded sky.
Between April and October, the nights are clearest and stargazing is exceptional.

On the programme: 4×4 safaris, meetings with the Bushmen, meerkat observation and, for the more adventurous, quad biking and horseback riding.
