The spirit of the journey

The private Mashatu Reserve occupies a geographic position unlike any other: the confluence of the Limpopo and Shashe rivers, at the meeting point of Botswana, South Africa and Zimbabwe. Known as the Land of Giants for its exceptional elephant populations, among the largest in all of southern Africa within a private reserve. Mashatu is a confidential destination that seasoned travellers often discover last, and later rank among their most memorable experiences.

The Tuli Block, of which Mashatu is the jewel, offers landscapes of rare distinctiveness in Botswana: ochre sandstone formations shaped by erosion, open plains, fig forests and wetlands that succeed one another in a setting both mineral and organic. The wildlife here is remarkably diverse — elephants, lions, leopards, cheetahs, giraffes, Cape elands, and more than 350 bird species recorded within the reserve.

Mashatu offers an activity few private reserves in Africa can match: the cycling safari. Guided by an experienced naturalist, you approach wildlife in silence, at the pace of an active exploration that puts your instinct and perception first. A physically engaging, sensory experience, fundamentally different from a 4x4 safari, and one that will stand out as among the most intense moments of the journey.

4x4 safaris and guided walks round out a consistently rich programme, in a reserve where visitor numbers are deliberately limited to preserve the quality of game viewing.

Mashatu fits naturally as an extension to a Botswana safari, and a few nights are enough to grasp its essence. But the reserve also deserves to be the main destination of a short, intense journey, for those seeking a different Africa, with no compromise on exclusivity.

MASHATU
Accessible only from Johannesburg or from Kruger by light aircraft, the Mashatu Reserve offers an exceptional diversity of untouched landscapes: savannah, forests, wetlands and plains stretching to the horizon, at the eastern edge of Botswana.
A unique sanctuary, Mashatu is home to the 7 great symbols of Africa: elephants, lions, giraffes, baobabs, elands, ostriches and Kori bustards.
3 nights at Mashatu Lodge will satisfy your appetite for different landscapes and ecosystems, complementing those already seen during your journey.

And in terms of wildlife, you will not be disappointed in the slightest!
The rangers and trackers from the Tswana community are among the most experienced in the country, with an intimate knowledge of this territory they have roamed their whole lives.
Dedicated and professional, they practise their craft with skill and put their expertise at travellers’ service year-round, in search of wildlife and the finest bird species.

Your safari experiences are varied and expertly guided, whether aboard an open 4×4 by day or by night, on a bike, on foot or on horseback.

That is the whole appeal of Mashatu: a variety of pleasures!
