À vivre

Magdalena Island, located in the Strait of Magellan in Tierra del Fuego, was once an essential supply stop for early navigators and explorers in the region. Today, it is a sanctuary for Magellanic penguins. Each year, more than 120,000 penguins come here to nest, offering a fascinating natural spectacle.
Accessible by boat from Punta Arenas, the island allows you to observe these birds up close in their natural habitat. A marked trail leads to a historic lighthouse, offering panoramic views of the island and its inhabitants. In addition to the penguins, the island is home to cormorants, gulls, and other seabirds, creating rich biodiversity.
A visit to Magdalena Island is a unique experience for wildlife and nature enthusiasts, offering total immersion in one of Patagonia's most dynamic ecosystems. This excursion provides a rare opportunity to understand and appreciate the life of the Magellanic penguin, an emblematic species of this southern region.
During the Australis cruise, the visit to Magdalena is scheduled for the final morning, before disembarking at Punta Arenas. It is not included in the cruise sailing in the opposite direction (Punta Arenas -> Ushuaia).
