Chiang Mai, the “new city”, located in northern Thailand, developed late but rapidly — hence its name. Situated along the ancient Silk Road, it nonetheless boasts a wealth of cultural riches: notably its many temples (or “wat”), such as the gold-clad Wat Phrathat Doi Suthep or the intricately decorated Wat Phra Singh, though the more modern Chiang Mai City Arts & Cultural Center, which traces the history of the kingdom, is also well worth a visit.
In its lively streets, you can also enjoy countless massage parlours or the Night Bazaar, the city's night market. Leaving these streets to explore the surrounding countryside, you enter a quieter, mountainous landscape dotted with rice paddies. Along the way, it is not unusual to see an elephant or a monk pass by, as if they had lived here for centuries.
