À vivre

Damaraland, once a self-governing bantustan during the apartheid era (1980-1989), now stretches across western Namibia. It takes its name from the Damara people, who still live there alongside other communities from across the country.

From a touristic and geological standpoint, this region is one of the most fascinating in Namibia. It captivates with the raw beauty of its unspoiled landscapes, alternating between vast arid expanses, acacia-dotted savannah and volcanic relief in fiery hues. The diversity of its fauna and flora makes it a prime location for wildlife observation. Here, animals have adapted to extreme conditions: the desert elephant, for instance, can travel up to 70 km a day in search of water and food.

In the background rises the Brandberg massif, whose Königstein peak — Namibia's highest point at 2,573 m — dominates the horizon. The region is also home to unique geological and cultural treasures: the petrified forest, the Twyfelfontein rock engravings listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the spectacular Vingerklip rock formation, and the majestic Spitzkoppe, nicknamed the “Matterhorn of Namibia”.
A land of contrasts and legends, Damaraland — sometimes grouped with Kaokoland under the name Kaokoveld — is a true open-air museum, where nature, culture and history meet in harmony.
