The first experience of habituating western lowland gorillas to scientists in an open environment took place at Ngaga Camp. It is here that Dr Magdalena Bermejo, sometimes referred to as the “Dian Fossey of Congo”, and her husband Germán Illera have been studying the primates for over 20 years.

Thanks to their work, certain gorilla families have become accustomed to human presence, making it possible to approach them. For the scientists, this proximity provides an opportunity to observe human-gorilla interactions, as well as the potential conflicts that can arise from encounters between humans and the wild.

At the crossroads of the gorillas’ habitat and that of the area’s smaller chimpanzees, one can also observe how competition, resource-sharing and interactions between primate species play out.
If the scientists are available, it is possible to speak with them about the effects of tourism on gorillas or conservation efforts for the species in Congo and beyond.
