El Calafate is the gateway to Los Glaciares National Park, set on the shores of Lago Argentino, home to one of the most striking natural phenomena on the UNESCO World Heritage list: the Perito Moreno glacier, an immense wall of ice 30 km long, 5 km wide, and 60 m high. Visible from the park's many viewpoints, its blue and white hues draw the eye from a distance.
It is best not to linger too close when, without warning, a block of ice breaks free from the glacier with a deafening crack before crashing into the water below!
The Perito Moreno glacier is emblematic of southern Patagonia — both relentless and spectacular.
