El Chaltén is a small village considered the national capital of trekking, dominated by the legendary Mount Fitz Roy. It was in 1952 that Fitz Roy was climbed for the first time. It was an enormous achievement with international repercussions. Ever since, this mountain has remained emblematic. It is at once so close that you can easily photograph it, and so inaccessible because of its imposing face. Its granite neighbours with their hanging glaciers, and countless lakes in multiple colours, some dating back to the Ice Age, form the backdrop of this part of Los Glaciares National Park. As you'll have gathered, there's no need to be a seasoned trekker to appreciate the sheer scale of these landscapes.
