À vivre

Picture yourself standing on steep rocks above the ocean, the sun warming your face, the wind playing with your hair, when suddenly the air is torn apart by a huge blast, like the sound of thunder close by. That blast doesn't come from a storm — it comes from Eqi Glacier (or Eqip Sermia), which you have a full panoramic view of.

Located five hours by boat from Ilulissat, Eqi Glacier is a 4 km-wide calving glacier. After reaching the Ataa Strait, boats weave their way through the ice to get as close as possible to the glacier's face. The icebergs scraping against the boat's metal hull and the hissing of air bubbles escaping from the ice create a strange soundscape — but it's really the glacier's own activity that's the most thrilling part. Watch closely and you'll regularly see whole walls of ice collapse into the water. Keep your ears open, but above all keep your eyes open: if you hear the roar, it's already too late. Also keep watch for wildlife — curious seals often pop their heads out of the water after a glacier calves.
