The Perito Moreno Glacier is a giant of ice located in Los Glaciares National Park. Covering roughly 250 km², 30 km long, with a 5-kilometer front and standing 170 meters high (74 meters of which rise above the water), it is arguably the most famous glacier in Argentine Patagonia.
Unlike nearly all the glaciers in the area, its size has not decreased in recent decades; it is even said to advance by 2 meters a day.
The glacier can be visited on a private French-speaking tour or a group tour in English and Spanish.
From El Calafate, follow the shore of Lake Argentino for 80 km before entering Los Glaciares National Park. Once you arrive near the glacier, you'll have free time for lunch.
Then, head up to the network of walkways for about fifteen minutes to take in the Perito Moreno Glacier in all its majesty from a series of vantage points. From these prime observation spots, watch for the reflections, rumbles and cracking sounds the glacier produces — it almost seems to take on a life of its own.
Watch for spectacular chunks of ice breaking off and crashing into the water below.
From the walkways, you can also see the Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the Andes mountain range.
Return to El Calafate in the late afternoon.
