Ile du Sud
The Lodge and the Tree Houses, designed and built by the Wilsons, offer a unique and welcoming environment, right down to the furniture, much of which was designed and made locally by Peter and Tony, with the help of three skilled furniture makers. Particular attention was given to the beds, down to the design of the mattresses, so much so that many guests say the beds are “the most comfortable in the South Island”.
The chef sources ingredients and produce from local farmers and suppliers as much as possible.
The kitchen garden is entirely organic and produces seasonal vegetables and herbs.
The aim is to reduce, recycle and compost in order to become a “zero waste” community.
The wood used in construction and interiors comes from responsible sources or is recycled and reclaimed timber.
The tree houses are equipped with small private fireplaces that rank among the most efficient in the world.
All rooms are very well insulated and fitted with double glazing.
The lodge offers free Wi-Fi, an outdoor pool and a restaurant.
The area in which the Lodge is located was marked on the district’s early maps as “Kai Whare”, a Māori term meaning “house of food”. Today, the Lodge’s dining room, with its relaxed and warm atmosphere, is at the heart of the Hapuku Lodge experience.
There you can watch dishes being prepared and chat with the chefs as they prepare your meal. During your stay you’ll notice that the lodge nurtures a passion for food — growing it, preparing it, cooking it and presenting it. The chef oversees everything related to the food served, from the Lodge gardens, where much of the vegetables and herbs used in the kitchen are grown, to gathering produce from local gardeners and growers, sourcing the best meat and fish directly from the farm or the fisherman, running the kitchen, creating seasonal menus and service.
All accommodations include a spa bath for 2, a fireplace and a balcony. The treehouse stands 9 metres above ground.
All air-conditioned suites have a dining area, a refrigerator and a tea/coffee tray. Each includes a sitting area with a flat-screen television, a DVD player and an iPod docking station. Your private bathroom has a rain shower and a hairdryer.
