Laikipia
Built entirely from local materials, Il Ngwesi Lodge perches on the edge of the Mararoi hills, near the Ngare Ndare River in Laikipia district. The sweeping views over Samburu are breathtaking!
The main lodge offers spectacular views, while the pool overlooks the valley and makes an excellent spot to relax. The waterhole, fed by a nearby spring, draws a wide variety of birds and animals daily. It is a vital resource for wildlife in this semi-arid part of Kenya.
A hide tucked into the hillside in front of the lodge allows photographers to get closer to the waterhole and enjoy the surroundings in complete quiet, observing without being seen.
Designed by Simon du Fresne, six spacious rooms accommodate two to four people.
Each offers a slightly different experience: some are tucked away with valley views, others connected to a neighbouring room by a rope bridge for families, and others overlooking the waterhole. All are designed in an “open to the bush” style, with opportunities for wildlife viewing. Two have larger decks for sleeping under the stars, in large four-poster beds, with nothing but the night sky as a roof.
You can also visit the rhino sanctuary, or a local Maasai cultural boma to learn about traditional hunting techniques and honey gathering, and enjoy local music and dance.
Those interested in community projects can also spend time with local women to learn about traditional Maasai beadwork techniques, or visit a local school or clinic built with the funds of an individual donor. All of these encounters are dignified and respectful, genuinely authentic, far removed from the tourist bustle of many community visits offered elsewhere in Kenya.
