Early morning departure from your hotel in Belém, with boat embarkation for Marajó Island (around 3 hours' navigation). Marajó Island is the largest fluvial island in the world, located at the mouth of the Amazon, where forest and savannah stretch out. On arrival at the dock, you are met and transferred by regular shuttle to your pousada in Soure. In the afternoon, guided walk through a typical Marajó fazenda — a 3-hour walk across lagoons, pastures and woodland, passing a 19th-century manor house, with wildlife sightings including buffalo, horses, caimans, capybaras, sloths, monkeys, egrets, scarlet ibis, spoonbills, parrots and more, along with the surrounding flora, until nightfall. For those who prefer not to walk as much, a simple visit to the fazenda and a much shorter walk are possible, to take in the typical surrounding landscape and birdlife.
Day 1: After breakfast, a canoe trip through the igarapés, passing through mangrove roots to the deserted beach of Araruna. Wildlife and flora observation, followed by a walk back along the coast to Barra Velha beach. Local lunch. In the afternoon, follow the coastline to the tip of Garrote beach, a sandbank between Marajó Bay and the Paracauari river estuary. Return to the hotel in the late afternoon, crossing an igarapé by regional boat and passing the Soure lighthouse. Dinner and overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: In the morning, visit the town of Soure, with stops at a buffalo-leather craft workshop, a traditional Marajó pottery workshop, and the local artisans' shop. Depart your hotel in the early afternoon for a boat crossing back to Belém, arriving in the late afternoon. On arrival at the dock, you are met and transferred by regular shuttle to your hotel.
